ISLAMABAD (Pak News) Prime Minister Imran Khan has contacted the economic team on the historic rise in prices of petroleum products. The Prime Minister has directed Federal Minister Omar Ayub and Special Assistant Nadeem Babar to hold an emergency press conference.

Private TV 92 News quoted sources as saying that Prime Minister Imran Khan also became active on the public reaction to the historic increase in prices of petroleum products by up to Rs 25 per liter. Sources said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has contacted the economic team, the Prime Minister has handed over the task to Umar Ayub and Nadeem Babar, the Prime Minister has issued orders to the Federal Minister and Special Assistant to hold an emergency press conference, the Prime Minister directed that prices increase. According to sources, Prime Minister Imran Khan has asked to highlight the rise in crude oil prices in the global market. Nadeem Babar has also been directed to submit a comparative review report with other countries in the region.

It may be recalled that this development has come at a time when the prices of petroleum products have been increased by up to Rs 25 per liter after the approval of Prime Minister Imran Khan. Prime Minister Imran Khan approved the summary of increase in prices of petroleum products after which the Ministry of Finance issued a notification of increase in prices of petroleum products. According to the notification issued by the Finance Ministry, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs 25.58 per liter, after which the new price of petrol has been fixed at Rs 100.10 per liter.

The price of diesel has been fixed at Rs 101.46 per liter after an increase of Rs 21.31 per liter and the price of kerosene at Rs 23.50 per liter has been increased to Rs 59.6 per liter. According to the Ministry of Finance, the price of light diesel has been increased by Rs 17.84 per liter and its new price has been fixed at Rs 55.98 per liter. Normally, new prices of petroleum products are implemented from the first of every month. The new prices came into effect from 12 noon on Friday. According to sources, the federal government has increased the prices of petroleum products without OGRA's summary and opened more doors of inflation for the people. The unusual increase in petrol and diesel prices was made three days earlier instead of July 1. According to credible sources, the federal government did not even wait for the monthly and unexpected monthly summary of OGRA while increasing the price of petrol by Rs 25 per liter.

Earlier, at the end of each month, OGRA sends a summary of the reduction or increase in prices of petroleum products to the government on which the federal government decides whether the people will be given relief or inconvenienced. Last month, the government slashed the prices of petroleum products in the country by up to Rs. 12 after a dramatic drop in global crude oil prices. However, despite the shortage of petroleum products, its unavailability caused severe hardships to the people. At the direction of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy also launched an investigation into the artificial shortage of petrol by marketing companies.

In addition, the government last month did not pass on the full benefits of falling global petroleum prices to the public and increased the petroleum levy by Rs 6 to the maximum level. It is to be noted that the prices of petroleum products are changed on the last day of every month and these prices are applied from the first day of the next month. However, the recent increase has been implemented before the end of the month.

Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections. Reacting to the rise in prices of petroleum products, PML-N President Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that the highest 33% increase in petroleum prices in the history of the country is in fact "Chinese scandal part two". Reacting, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Siraj-ul-Haq said that the budget has not been approved yet and the government has increased the price of petrol. He said that the reduction in prices for a few days would now be received from the people with interest, to curb the mafia that the claimants were helpless before the mafia. Siraj-ul-Haq said that efforts are being made to shut down the entire country by increasing the prices of petroleum products. Jamaat-e-Islami rejects the increase in the prices of petroleum products if the prices are not fixed according to international prices. Jamaat-e-Islami will protest.
